Timbre
Timbre is the quality that lets us tell two sounds apart even when they have the same pitch and the same loudness, like a viola and a French horn playing the same note. We can observe it in the waveform, which shows how the sound pressure changes over time, and in the spectrogram, which shows which frequencies are present and how they evolve. A sine wave has a single frequency, instruments have many harmonics, while the crash, the sea and white noise fill most of the spectrum.
