What is MIDI?
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a protocol that lets instruments, controllers and computers exchange messages, not sound. Every gesture, such as pressing a key, turning a knob or moving a slider, becomes a message of just a few bytes. Note On and Note Off carry the note number (0–127) and the velocity, that is how hard the key was pressed. Control Change (CC) messages carry the value (0–127) of a continuous control, such as volume (CC 7). Each message also states the channel (1–16) it is addressed to.
