What is FM synthesis?
FM synthesis (Frequency Modulation) is a non-linear synthesis in which a modulator oscillator varies the frequency of a carrier. With very few elements, it generates extremely complex spectra, and was one of the first techniques truly made possible by digital technology. Theorized by John Chowning in 1973, it found its most famous incarnation in the Yamaha DX-7 (1983), one of the most revolutionary synthesizers in electronic music history.
